Emergencies

Emergencies

Supervisors and workers work together to identify potential emergencies that may arise during the course of the work and perhaps as a result of the work being performed.

Emergency responses vary with the location and type of site. In general, emergency responses can be divided into Non-Hospital and Hospital.

Non-hospital emergency procedures follow the basic procedures outlined in the Emergency Guidebook.

Hospital emergency procedures follow the Emergency Code System. Training for this system is captured in Hospital Fire/Code training on Mosaic/Avenue. Please click this link to our Hospital Emergencies webpage.

Fire Drills

On Campus

Fire drills on campus (including MDCL, CRL and IAHS) are arranged and carried out by EOHSS. The drills are announced via the Facilities Services building notification listserve. Please visit that site and sign up for your building notifications.

David Braley Health Sciences Centre

Fire drills at the DBHSC are arranged by building management and notification is distributed to all occupants for that purpose. *please note clinical occupants of this building do not evacuate during drill per their fire plan.

Waterloo Regional Campus

Fire drills are arranged by the host university. Please contact Tami Everding for details.

Niagara Regional Campus

Fire drills are arranged by the host university. Please contact Tami Everding for details.

Hospital Locations

Hospital Emergency and Disaster Management (EDM) specialists manage a program of code drills at each location. View the Hospital Emergencies webpage.

Individualized Emergency Response Plan

This plan is required by Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. Please see more information here. The form for this plan is found here.

Using your cell phone

If you use your cell phone during an emergency, it is important to remember that if you require to call for help, you must call the emergency number for your building, and in most cases, that is not 911. By calling 911 directly, you bypass site emergency staff and security which may delay emergency response and medical assistance.

If you have to use your cell phone, call the switchboard and talk to an operator. Dialing the emergency extension from an outside line is not a valid procedure at all locations.
