Lessons Learned

Program Successes:

  • Students learned about the scope of practice of other health professionals, the value of home care, and had insights into their own approach.
  • Students called the placements life altering. 92% would recommend the experience to others despite challenges. 78% enjoyed the second experience and believed that it was a valuable experience.
  • Clinicians also found the program beneficial in that it enable them to teach students about their role and about the services available for patients in the community.
  • Despite challenges, over 95% of clinicians chose to once again take students during the second phase of the project.

Program Challenges:

  • Students and clinicians both have very busy schedules which makes it challenging for coordinators to organize placements.
  • Providing students with opportunities to see a wider variety of health professions and in more local destinations was difficult.
  • Challenging to find clinicians when placements had to be cancelled at the last minute by either students or clinicians.

" I would really like if we had the opportunity to follow many other allied health professionals to get an idea of their scope of practice. I felt that this was an extremely beneficial exercise. I look forward to my next one."
