Dr. Karen Bailey

Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Karen Bailey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, the Director of the Pediatric Trauma Program and the Pediatric Surgery Clerkship Coordinator. Dr. Bailey joined McMaster University in January 2010 after completing a Pediatric General Surgery clinical research fellowship at The Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Her research interests include childhood obesity, bariatrics, global health, trauma and intestinal motility.

Dr. Luis Braga

Pediatric Urology

Dr. Luis Braga is the Director of the MPSRC, Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and the Research Director of the Urology Residency Program. He also holds an Associate Appointment in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr. Braga joined McMaster University’s Department of Surgery in 2008 after completing a three-year fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Dr. Braga has published extensively in the pediatric urology literature and has completed his Master’s Degree in Health Research Methodology. Dr. Braga has been an invested member of the MPSRC since its conception, raising the bar for clinical research with his groundbreaking studies on treatment of antenatal hydronephrosis and long-term outcomes of hypospadias surgery. This innovative work continues to solidify Dr. Braga’s status as a top researcher in pediatric urology.

Dr. Brian Cameron

Dr. Brian Cameron

Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Brian Cameron is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and Director of the McMaster International Surgery Desk (ISD). Dr. Cameron has done extensive work in Guyana and continues to play an important role in surgical training in Guyana through his involvement in the Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS). Dr. Cameron’s research interests include qualitative work in Hirschsprung’s disease, surgical clerkship professionalism, as well as quantitative research in international surgical training and program development.

Dr. Jorge DeMaria

Dr. Jorge DeMaria

Pediatric Urology

Dr. Jorge DeMaria is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and an Associate member of the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster. Dr. DeMaria has an extensive history in Hamilton and with McMaster University. He has been a leader in pediatric urology and continues to advance the field through his interest in ongoing refinement of pediatric urological surgical techniques, patient outcomes and surgical education.

Peter Fitzgerald

Dr. Peter Fitzgerald

Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Peter Fitzgerald is the President of the McMaster Children’s Hospital and a Professor in the Department of Surgery. He has been a Pediatric Surgeon at McMaster Children’s Hospital for the past 20 years and is the Executive Lead of the Women’s Health and Newborn Care Program. Dr. Fitzgerald is also President of the Canadian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (CAPS). He has an interest in minimal access surgery and reconstructive chest wall surgery. His other research interests include evidence-based surgery reviews, assessment of evidence-based practices in pediatric surgery and surgical education.

Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Helene Flageole is a Professor in the Department of Surgery with a joint appointment in the Department of Pediatrics. She is also the Chief of the Department of Pediatric Surgery as well as the Program Director for Pediatric Surgery. Dr. Flageole is also Chair of the Pediatric Surgical Chiefs of Canada (PSCC). Dr. Flageole joined McMaster University and the Children’s Hospital in 2007 after spending 11 years in the Department of Surgery at McGill University in Montreal. Dr. Flageole’s clinical research interests include pyloric stenosis, congenital birth defects and research education.

Dr. Kourosh Sabri

Dr. Kourosh Sabri

Pediatric Ophthalmology

Dr. Kourosh Sabri is an Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery and the director and founder of the McMaster Pediatric Eye Research Group (McPERG). Dr. Sabri joined McMaster University’s Department of Surgery in January 2010 after working as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta in Edmonton for 3 years. In 2006, Dr. Sabri completed his fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. His research interests include retinopathy of prematurity, strabismus, telemedicine, vision screening and resident education.
Mark Walton

Dr. Mark Walton

Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Mark Walton is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and the Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Medical Education for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine. Dr. Walton joined McMaster University in 1993 after completing his residency in Pediatric Surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Dr. Walton completed his Surgical Teaching Fellowship at Izaak Walton Killam Children’s Hospital in Halifax, Nova Scotia. His research interests include medical education, resident evaluation, minimally invasive surgery and quality of life studies.

 

Bethany Easterbrook, B.Kin, MSc (c)

Research Coordinator

Bethany is the interim research coordinator for the MPSRC. She completed her Bachelor of Kinesiology with a major in Psychology at the University of Toronto. Her work includes coordinating ongoing and upcoming research projects, grant submissions and the intership program.

Research Assistant

Christina is the research assistant for the Division of Pediatric Surgery. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour with a minor in French at McMaster University. She is currently coordinating and assisting with several projects, including the SUPP and EVICEL Trials.

Melissa McGrath, BHSc.

Research Assistant

Melissa is the research assistant for the Division of Pediatric Urology. Coming from a background in accounting, she is currently completing her Bachelors in Arts and Science - specializing in Health Sciences at Wilfrid Laurier University. Melissa is the study coordinator for the ALPHA, EXPRESSO, CLASH, HOLD and AHN studies.

Khalid Al-Harbi

Dr. Khalid Al-Harbi

Pediatric General Surgery

Dr. Khalid Al-Harbi is an associate member of the MPSRC, currently working at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre in Jedda, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Al-Harbi’s research interests include evidence-based surgery reviews, pediatric bariatric surgery, and quality of life research.

Dr. Poenaru

Dr. Dan Poenaru

International Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Poenaru was a Visiting Professor at McMaster in 2011-2012 and remains a collaborator with the MPSRC. He has worked as a volunteer surgeon in Kijabe, Kenya, where he has started the BethanyKids pediatric surgical unit within the AIC Kijabe Hospital, and now works in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia. Dr. Poenaru has collaborated with the MPSRC on projects studying the global burden of disease and surgical outcomes in low- and middle-income countries.
