Bethune Round Table 2014
The 14th Bethune Round Table conference was hosted at McMastser and chaired by Dr. Brian Cameron. The conference attracted 150
participants from 17 countries representing 49 organizations including
universities, professional societies and NGOs. The conference theme “Improving
Global Outcomes Through Safer Surgery” was addressed by 5 keynote speakers, 27
podium presentations and 21 poster presentations. The high quality of the

surgeons, anesthetists and obstetricians with colleagues working to improve
surgical care in low-resource settings. Post-conference courses were fully
subscribed, including the CNIS Trauma Team Training Instructor Course, Regional
Blocks for Trauma course, and a Getting Started in Health Research course. The
BRT will be held in Calgary in 2015, and Halifax in 2016.

CIHR International Pediatric Urology
Task Force on Hypospadias
This meeting was held September 19th, 2013 at the Aria Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Attendees included pediatric urologists from across Canada, the USA, Brazil, and Europe. Dr. Luis Braga hosted the meeting in collaboration with Dr. Darius Bagli, Dr. Armando Lorenzo, and Dr. Joao Pippi Salle from the Hospital for Sick Children. Support for the meeting was provided by a Planning Grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The one-day meeting included expert speakers on: prospective data collection in multicentre research, editors from top pediatric urology journals, and a representative of the patient organization Hypospadias and Epispadias Association. The afternoon included sessions for discussion on reporting standards on hypospadias surgery and improving the quality of the literature in this area. The goal of this meeting was to advance hypospadias research toward consensus on reporting standardization and global collaboration.
An evaluation was distributed at the end of the conference to the 33 invited participants, 100% of which were returned. The evaluation revealed that 85% of participants either agreed or strongly agreed (6/7 or 7/7 on a 7-point Likert scale) they were satisfied with the workshop overall, 81% would use the reporting standards discussed, and 91% saw the meeting as a useful opportunity to network and build research capacity. A high majority of the participants (97%) agreed or strongly agreed that the meeting was well-organized and the workshop was well-facilitated. Most participants (82%) agreed or strongly agreed that this meeting will help in conducting multicentre research on hypospadias in the future.
Comments from participants included examples such as: "I have been very grateful to take part in this landmark meeting. I look forward to future collaboration with colleagues and the fruit that it will bear,” and “extremely well done symposium on a very difficult topic with so little evidence base & significant subjectivity & reporting bias.” The most common feedback given in the evaluations was the need for more group discussions and follow-up meetings on this topic.
