Neonatal Circumcision: Educational Surgical Training

Jorge DeMaria

This website was created by Dr. Jorge DeMaria with the goal of creating a standardized, accessible, web-based instructional video to review the contraindications to neonatal circumcision, discuss the use of local anaesthesia, discuss complications and review the surgical techniques commonly employed to help reduce the complication rates of neonatal circumcision. This information is important for a wide range of health practitioners including: family physicians, pediatricians, pediatric urologists, pediatric surgeons, residents and fellows.

Dr. DeMaria hosted a workshop for community practitioners of neonatal circumcision at McMaster University in 2010, where this information was first presented. As part of the workshop, a survey was conducted, the results of which are published in the August 2013 edition of the Canadian Urological Association Journal, entitled
"Are physicians performingneonatal circumcisions well-trained?"
The article was also featured in the National Post, a national newspaper in Canada, and the Medical Post, a Canada-wide publication for doctors and nurses.
