Current Students

Fast-track your degree with the Jump Start to PhD initiative!

High caliber Master’s students may be transferred to the PhD program between 2 terms and 22 months after initial registration in the Master’s program without defending a Master’s thesis. Some conditions apply, inquire with the Program about details. Master’s students admitted in September 2017 who transfer to PhD prior to the end of September 2018 will receive a one-time $1000 bonus.

 


 

Progression Through the Program

Masters

Year 1

  • SGS 101 and 201
  • Health and Safety Training
  • 3-unit course
  • First committee meeting (within first 6 months)
  • Masters research
  • Teaching Assistantship/Research Assistantship (if available)

Year 2

  • 3-unit course (may also be completed in the first year)
  • Masters research
  • Teaching Assistantship/Research Assistantship (if available)
  • Department seminar
  • Supervisor committee meeting (by the 18 month)
  • M.Sc. defense or Ph.D. transfer examination (must transfer before the end of the 22 month)

 


 

Doctoral

Year 1

  • 3-unit course to complete course requirements
  • Doctoral research
  • Teaching Assistantship/RA (if available)
  • Supervisory committee meeting
  • SGS 101 and 201 (if not completed at the MSc level)

Year 2

  • Doctoral research
  • Teaching Assistantship/Research Assistantship (if available)
  • Supervisory Committee Meeting
  • Comprehensive exam (by the 18 months)
  • Department seminar

Year 3

  • Doctoral research
  • Teaching Assistantship
  • Supervisory Committee Meeting

Year 4

  • Doctoral research
  • Teaching Assistantship/Research Assistantship/Thesis Fellowship (if available)
  • Supervisory committee meeting (seeks approval to write-up)
  • Department seminar
  • Submission of thesis and Ph.D. defense
