Research Interests

Dr. Freitag is a co-investigator in collaboration with several multi-centre clinical trials in critical care.  Current and recent collaboration include: Lung Open Ventilation Study (LOVS); Prophylaxis for Thromboembolism in Critical Care Trail (PROTECT), Oscillation for ARDS Treated Early (OSCILLATE), Dalteparin’s Influence on Renally Compromised: anti-Ten-A (DIRECT).

He is also a co-investigator in various clinical trials in cystic fibrosis.  He is involved in multi-centre Canadian trials looking at the prevalence of risk factors and management of osteoporosis in adult CF patients; mapping and isolation of genes influencing disease severity in CF; delivery systems and/or inhaled medications in CF.  Other areas of interest include management and surveillance of airway inflammation, energy requirements and expenditure, as well as exercise performance in CF patients.

Activities and Contributions

Dr. Freitag is a clinician-educator at McMaster University. He is the Divisional Director of Critical Care for the Department of Medicine and the ICU Site Director for clinical activities at the MUMC Site. He regularly teaches at an undergraduate and postgraduate level on topics of respiratory and critical care medicine.

His clinical practice includes critical care and respiratory medicine. He has an outpatient practice in adult and pediatric respiratory medicine, including specific clinical interests in cystic fibrosis and chronic respiratory failure. Throughout his clinical practice, he supervises learners of all levels including medical students and residents from numerous specialties.
