Education and Professional Standing

Dr. Van Spall completed her Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine degrees at the University of Toronto. She then completed postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology, and a clinical fellowship in Echocardiography at the University of Toronto. She subsequently completed a Master of Public Health degree at the Harvard School of Public Health. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with certification in Internal Medicine and Cardiology.

Clinical activities

Dr. Van Spall is a full-time cardiologist in the Department of Medicine. Her clinical activities are in Echocardiography, Heart Failure, and Cardiac Critical Care. She is involved in teaching and mentoring residents and fellows in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Echocardiography.

Research interests

Dr. Van Spall is a Principal Investigator for the Knowledge Translation and the Heart Failure programs at the Population Health Research Institute. Her research, supported primarily by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Ontario's Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, is in knowledge translation and health systems improvement pertaining to cardiovascular disease. She mentors postgraduate research fellows, medical residents, and medical students in health services research. She has won several research awards, and her work has been published in high-impact medical journals, including JAMA, Lancet, Circulation, and Annals of Internal Medicine.
