Two endowed chairs announced

Andrew Macpherson
Dr. Andrew Macpherson, professor in the Department of Medicine.

Two new endowed chairs have been announced in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University.

Dr. Andrew J. Macpherson is the inaugural chair holder of the Farncombe Family Chair in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Dr. Stuart J. Connolly has been named the inaugural chair holder of the Salim Yusuf Chair in Cardiology at McMaster University.

Dr. Macpherson came to McMaster University from Switzerland in 2004. He is a professor in the Department of Medicine of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and holds senior Canada Research Chair in Mucosal Immunology.

An accredited specialist in gastroenterology and general internal medicine, he was educated at Camelford Comprehensive School in Cornwall, U.K. and Emmanuel College, Cambridge (Senior Scholar and Bachelor Scholar). 

Dr. Macpherson has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards including the Emmanuel College Prize (awarded twice), the Colin MacKenzie Prize (Biochemistry), the Peake Prize (Medicine), an MRC PhD Scholarship, MRC Training Fellowship and MRC Clinician Scientist Fellowship, the Beit Fellowship and the Ciba Fellowship.

Dr. Macpherson's research interests concern the interactions of the mucosal immune system with commensal intestinal bacteria and the immunopathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease.  He is the author of more than 75 peer reviewed journal articles, reviews and book chapters.  

Previous positions include open research fellow, Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge; registrar and senior registrar, Cambridge, Leicester and London (UK); MRC clinician scientist, senior lecturer in Medicine and consultant physician and gastroenterologist, King's College Hospital London (UK); senior scientist and medical faculty member (consultant gastroenterologist), Institute of Experimental Immunology, Universitätsspital, Zurich, Switzerland.

An amateur pianist and organist, Dr. Macpherson also enjoys political history, Renaissance and Baroque music, surfing and skiing.  He and his spouse Claire Niven have three sons, Jamie, Atholl and Alex.

Dr. Connolly is a Professor in the Department of Medicine of the Faculty of Health Sciences. He holds a Masters from Fordham University and an MD from McGill University in Montreal. He received his specialist training in cardiology at the University of Toronto and Stanford University.

A faculty member since 1983, Dr. Connolly is an active clinical cardiologist and director of the arrhythmia service for the McMaster Division of Cardiology. He became a full professor in 1994 and the division director for cardiology in September 2005.

Stuart Connolly is recognized for his research specializing in the evaluation of treatments for heart rhythm disorders, particularly by means of randomized controlled trials. He has published more than 135 scientific articles over his career. He is currently a member of the editorial boards for Heart, the American Heart Journal and the Journal of Pacing and Electrophysiology.
