Grant announced for HIV prevention research
The Canadian Institutes for Health Research has announced an operating grant for innovative biomedical and clinical HIV/AIDS research.
Charu Kaushic, professor of pathology and molecular medicine, has received $250,000 for a clinical trial to examine whether vaginal health can be improved in African, Caribbean and black women, who are at higher risk of HIV-1.
This project will be done in collaboration with community organizations that serve African, Caribbean and black communities in the Toronto area. Specifically, the study will examine whether a vaginal ring that contains estrogen in combination with probiotic treatment will help colonize healthy vaginal bacteria and decrease the inflammation and HIV-1 target cells in women.
