Published: October 5, 2017

Michael G. DeGroote, a Hamilton businessman and philanthropist, has been awarded the 2017 Wayne C. Fox Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honour of McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business.

The honour was given at the annual Evening of Accolades gala of the business school last week. Twenty-five years ago, his donation led to the opening of the school's building on campus.

Since then he has given more than $155 million to the Faculty of Health Sciences which has started and supported many major initiatives including the building of the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery; several research institutes including the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research, the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care and the McMaster Stem Cell and Cancer Research Institute; several endowed research chairs and postdoctoral positions. The Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine is named in tribute to his generosity.
