The president of Ukraine Peter Poroshenko today presented awards of merit to Dr. Carolyn Levis and her colleagues of the Canada-Ukraine Foundation medical mission team for their outstanding achievements of service to the country.

The team is on its fourth medical mission to help wounded soldiers and civilians in Ukraine.

Levis, an associate professor of surgery for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and a plastic surgeon for St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, and Krystina Waler received the Order of Princess Olga which is given to women. Their colleague Oleh Antonyshyn received the Order of Merit, which is the same award for men.

Levis thanked the president for the honour, adding: "I draw strength from and am inspired by the patients I have treated, along with my Ukrainian counterparts at the military hospital," said Levis. "I gratefully accept this award on behalf of the wider Canadian community and we stand united with Ukrainians who want a better future."
