Former professor Maurice Mishkel dies

Dr. Maurice Mishkel, who joined faculty of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine in its formative days, has died. He was 86.

He received his medical and PhD degrees and practiced in his native Sydney, Australia, before coming to Canada in 1969 to join McMaster University and become the founder and director of the Hamilton General Hospital –McMaster Lipid Research Laboratory.

As a professor of medicine, he was a committed teacher of medical, nursing and dietitian students; a published researcher on the role of lipid metabolism and their impact on coronary artery disease, and a prominent clinician.

He maintained an active role for several years after becoming a professor emeritus in 1989. He leaves his wife Norma, three sons Gregory, Ian, David and their families.

“Dr. Mishkel was a dedicated physician who sincerely believed in his responsibility for education, research and patient care,” said Akbar Panju, acting chair of the Department of Medicine.

“On behalf of our entire faculty, I would like to pass on our sincere condolences to his family, and to give tribute to his consistent contribution to the growth of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.”
