John Kelton has been reappointed as dean and vice-president to lead the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University for the next five years. He has held the position since 2001.

"Dr. Kelton’s commitment to excellence, his leadership within the Faculty and the community, and his ability to develop and deliver new programs and projects has generated a decade of outstanding advancement for McMaster and our students," said Patrick Deane, president of McMaster University. "I look forward to working with him as an important member of the University’s senior team."

He noted that in the past decade Kelton had led the doubling of the Faculty’s enrolment to 5,000 students, growth that has included the opening of regional medical school campuses in Waterloo and Niagara.

The Faculty now oversees $120 million a year in research and for the past five years McMaster has ranked second or third for research among Canadian medical universities.

"The Faculty’s team of outstanding faculty, researchers, staff and students has worked hard over the past decade in our pursuit of international excellence," said Kelton. "Our momentum has been accelerated by the wonderful philanthropic gifts from Michael G. DeGroote, David Braley and the Farncombe family, among many others."

Kelton’s reappointment is for the term of July 1, 2011 through June 30, 2016.
