Retired Mac professor nominated for citizen award

Dr. John Frid, a former associate clinical professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, has been nominated for the 2006 Hamilton Citizen of the Year award.

A retired rheumatologist and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Frid held a part-time appointment in the Department of Medicine from 1968 until his retirement in 1994. He is also a former dean of health science at Mohawk College, a senior member of the Rotary Club of Hamilton, and works with Street Kids International, a global organization that advocates for street youth.

Frid is one of six nominees for the Royal Bank Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award. The winner will be announced at a gala ceremony on Jan. 29.

The other nominees:

  • Morteza Jafarpour, executive director of the Settlement and Integration Services Organization;
  • Don MacVicar, chair of the board of the Robert Land Community Association;
  • Chris Spence, director of education for the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board;
  • Carl Turkstra, chairman of Turkstra Lumber and member of the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction;
  • Nathalie Xian Yi Yan, a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture.
