I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Susan Reid as chair, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University effective July 1, 2012.

Dr. Reid graduated in medicine from McMaster University in 1987, and completed her General Surgery Residency training (1992) and then Critical Care Fellowship (1993) at McMaster.  She has worked for Hamilton Health Sciences as a general surgeon and intensivist since 1993.  Her primary clinical interests are breast cancer and critical care.

Extensively involved in education at the undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty levels as an instructor, mentor, clinical and research supervisor, the associate professor has served as the associate chair of education for the Department of Surgery since 2009.  She currently sits as past-president of the Canadian Association of General Surgeons(CAGS), and the CAGS representative to the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).  In addition to serving as a member of the Faculty of Health Sciences Postgraduate Education Committee and the Department Education Coordinators Committee, Dr. Reid also acts as chair of the Residency Education Committee, Department of Surgery. She is a past program director for the McMaster General Surgery Residency Program.

Dr. Reid’s research interests are centred on surgical education.  She was recently named a 2012-2013 Ethicon Endo-Surgery Surgical Education Research Fellow by the Association for Surgical Education.

Dr. Reid served several years as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and is a past chair of the CAGS Postgraduate Education Committee. She acts as a grant and journal reviewer for several journals. She regularly organizes and provides teaching sessions, seminars and workshops on a wide variety of topics for learners at all levels and in various departments in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster.  Dr. Reid has been rewarded for her myriad contributions to teaching at McMaster with recognition as the Best Contributor to Resident Education, General Surgery Residency Program (2009) and Mentor of the Year, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (2007) and was nominated for the PAIRO Teaching Award twice.
