I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Fiona Smaill as chair of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, for the period July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2014.

Fiona Smaill is professor and chair of the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine, a medical microbiologist for the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program, and consultant in infectious diseases and infection control and co-director of the HIV clinic at Hamilton Health Sciences.

After earning her medical degree at Otago University in New Zealand in 1978 and completing General Medicine training at Wellington Hospital, Dr. Smaill did residencies in Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Medical Microbiology at McMaster University and received her MSc in Design Measurement and Evaluation (Clinical Epidemiology) from McMaster University in 1989.

Dr. Smaill is actively involved in clinical trials in HIV management, the development of vaccines for tuberculosis, and management of infections in pregnancy. She is an associate editor for ACP Evidence-Based Medicine and was a founding reviewer of the Cochrane Library. She is the co-editor of the soon to be published second edition of the textbook "Evidence-Based Infectious Diseases".  She continues to serve as the chair of the Royal College Specialty Committee for Medical Microbiology.
