Dated: March 17, 2008

From: John G. Kelton, MD, Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences

I am pleased to announce that Dr. David Koff has accepted the position of chair, Department of Radiology effective March 1, 2008.

Dr. Koff has been an assistant professor of radiology at the University of Toronto, a chest and body radiologist at Sunnybrook Health Science Centre and a research associate at the Sunnybrook Research Institute.

David Koff immigrated to Canada in 1998 following 18 years as a radiologist (manager from 1990-98) at the Centre d’Imagerie Médicale de Creil in Oise, France. Upon arrival in Canada, he founded Easy Pax Inc., specializing in teleradiology and medical digital imaging, and served as its president from 1998 to 2005. In addition, he was a staff radiologist at the Montreal Heart Institute and a lecturer at the Université de Montreal from 2002 to 2004.

Dr. Koff received his MD in 1978 and a specialist designation in diagnostic radiology in 1981 at the Rene-Descartes University Paris V. This was followed by clinical fellowships in chest and body imaging (University Health Network, Toronto, 1998-2000) and pediatric radiology (Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, 2000).

Dr. Koff planned and led the first Digital Imaging and Teleradiology Conference at the University of Toronto to foster collaboration between medical imaging departments and computer science and engineering programs. He is a cofounder of Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) Canada, part of a worldwide initiative to foster interoperability between software used in healthcare. Dr. Koff is a member of the Canadian Association of Radiologists (CAR) PACS/Teleradiology committee developing guidelines for image compression and teleradiology, and collaborated with Canada Health Infoway, developing standards for digital imagining and communication to be implemented as part of the pan-Canadian Electronic Health Records standards. David Koff has established international relationships with researchers interested in medical imaging informatics across North America, and in Brazil and Europe.

The focus of Dr. Koff’s current research is medical imaging informatics. He was principal investigator on a grant evaluating lossy JPEG and JPEG 2000 compression for digital medical images from 2005-2006. Dr. Koff has previous industry experience in digital imaging as program director at Easy Pax Inc (1999-2002), and as program director of a research contract with the University of Technology of Compiegne, France.

Dr. Koff has supervised students at the graduate and postgraduate levels since 1998 and has been an invited speaker at numerous medical imaging seminars and conferences. Dr. Koff was approved to develop a master’s level program in Medical Imaging Informatics at the University of Toronto in cooperation with colleagues from Harvard Medical School in Boston and North Western University in Chicago.

In addition to his academic position in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, Dr. Koff has also been appointed as chief of the department of diagnostic imaging at Hamilton Health Sciences.

I hope you will join me in welcoming Dr. Koff.
