From: John G. Kelton, MD, Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Paul Moayyedi as director (acting) of the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute effective August 1, 2012. This appointment will initially be for one year and is pending University Senate approval.

Dr. Moayyedi earned a degree in medicine from Bristol University in 1988 and trained in gastroenterology (GI) at the University of Leeds. He obtained a PhD in medicine and a Masters in Public Health, also from the University of Leeds. He was appointed professor at the University of Birmingham in 2001. He then moved to McMaster University to be the first recipient of the Richard Hunt/AstraZeneca Chair of Gastroenterology in 2004 and became director of the Division of Gastroenterology in 2006.

He is co-editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Gastroenterology and is also joint coordinating editor of the Upper Gastrointestinal and Pancreatic Diseases Cochrane Review Group. He is interested in epidemiology, randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews related to functional and organic GI disease and has 245 peer reviewed publications with 5,700 citations.

Dr. Moayyedi, in consultation with Dr. Stephen Collins (associate dean, research) and me, has outlined strategic objectives that he will focus on as acting director. These objectives include enhancing the stability and output of the institute, improving integration between its basic and clinical sciences activities, optimizing the use of its existing infrastructure and resources and expanding the cadre of junior research talent.

"The Farncombe Institute is already the best in Canada when it comes to digestive health research and our aim is to be the best globally," Dr. Moayyedi said. "We are one of the few institutes that conduct world-class research both at the bench and at the bedside."

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Moayyedi as he takes on this important role.
