I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. William Orovan as associate dean (clinical services) for the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University effective July 1, 2012

Dr. Orovan is a graduate of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine, obtaining his MD in 1975.  He has been a member of the Faculty since 1981 and is currently a professor. He has been chair of the McMaster University Department of Surgery since 1999, and he acted as interim dean and vice-president for the Faculty of Health Sciences from December 2000 until June 2001.

Dr. Orovan also received his Bachelor of Science degree at McMaster University and his Master in Business Administration (MBA) degree from Queen’s University.  He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (1980), a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology.  He has practiced as a urological surgeon in Ontario since 1981.

Dr. Orovan has held various administrative positions within St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Ontario including 12 years as chief of the Department of Surgery and four years as chief of the Medical Staff.  Dr. Orovan served on the Board of the Ontario Medical Association for eight years and was president of the association in 1999.  He has also served as member of the board of the Canadian Medical Association

Dr. Orovan has a longstanding interest in public policy issues pertaining to health care.  He has spoken widely on issues of health care delivery, its organization, funding, and future directions both provincially, nationally and internationally.  He was appointed to the Provincial Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity and Economic Progress and previously served as a board director for Smart Systems for Health Agency. He currently serves on the board of Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee. Dr. Orovan is the Ontario medical director for Maple Leaf HIFU a provider of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound treatment of organ confined prostate cancer.  He is active in community service organizations and is a past chair of the board of the Hamilton Community Foundation.  Dr. Orovan has been recognized by both medical and non-medical organizations for his contributions to the community.

Dr. Orovan’s clinical and academic interests are in urological oncology, an area in which he has published and continues an active practice.

In his role as associate dean (clinical services), Dr. Orovan will assist the dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences with clinical activities that impact the Faculty at the organizational level.  He will work closely with other senior academic leaders within the Faculty and with the vice-presidents (medical) of the affiliated teaching hospitals.
