From: John G. Kelton, M.D., Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Akbar Panju as acting chair of the Department of Medicine, effective July 1, 2016.

Dr. Panju graduated from the University of Liverpool Medical School in 1974. After work as a family doctor in Northern Ontario, he came to McMaster in 1981 for a residency in internal medicine. In 1986, he joined the faculty of the Department of Medicine and, in 2002, he became professor. He is presently associate chair, clinical for the Department.

For the past 15 years, Dr. Panju has been the division director of internal medicine and the medical director of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care. From 1998 to 2008, he was Chief of Medicine at Hamilton Health Sciences, and he has served in many administrative positions in the Faculty and Hamilton Health Sciences.

Recognition of his excellent work has included a Resident Teaching Award; the Department's Jack Hirsh Award for outstanding academic achievement; the Faculty's Jack Sibley Award for teaching; the Physician's Distinguished Award from the Hamilton Academy of Medicine; the Sir William Osler Award from the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine; and the Mentor of the Year Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Panju has held the William Walsh Professorship and the Medard DeGroote Chair of Medicine, and he is currently the Boris Family Chair in Education and Internal Medicine.

Please join me in welcoming Akbar to this senior academic administrative position.

I would like to thank Dr. Paul O’Byrne for his superb work in this role since 2002.
