Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the top ten diseases causing disability in individuals of developed countries. The World Health Organization estimated that 9.6% of men and 18% of women over 60 years of age suffer from OA. OA has a major impact on quality of life, with over 80% of individuals with OA facing limitations with movement and 25% affected individuals being unable to perform their activities of daily living, The prevalence of OA is steadily rising as a result of increasing life expectancies, higher rates of obesity, the number of individuals reaching retirement age of 65 years, and a growing number of younger (aged 45 to 54) more active individuals. OA can also cause complications with other diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, as OA results in restriction of movement and physical inactivity.

The cost of treating OA is approximately $5700 USD per annum. In 2012, more than 538,000 Canadians had priority surgical procedures and specialized treatments, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). That’s more procedures than have been performed in any other year in Canada and an increase of nearly 21,000 over 2011. The number of hip and knee replacements performed in Canada increased by 15% between 2010 and 2012, costing more than $100 million to the health care system. In approximately thirty years, it is estimated that one individual will be diagnosed with OA every thirty seconds. The increasing prevalence of OA and subsequent demand for joint replacement surgery is creating a large burden on health care resources, clearly demonstrating a fundamental need for continued research in OA and joint replacement.
