Call for Poster and Oral Abstract Submissions

Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows training in an area of health science research are invited to participate in this year's FHS Graduate Plenary Poster and Oral Sessions.

Those interested in presenting are encouraged to review the following guidelines on abstract submission.

The deadline for receipt of all abstract submissions is March 25th, 2020.  Abstract submissions should be submitted by email to the relevant graduate program.  A complete listing of program contacts may be found below.

Top abstract submissions will be selected within each graduate program and those selected will be notified of their success.  Presenters will have the opportunity to showcase their work at one of the event's poster or oral sessions, and will have their names published in this year's program and on the FHS Graduate Studies website.  Winning presentations will also be celebrated at the Awards Reception.

Graduate Students

Health Sciences Graduate Studies invites nominations for Graduate Student (Category A) Awards. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee and the award recipients will be celebrated at the FHS Graduate Plenary Awards Reception.

CATEGORY A — GRADUATE STUDENT AWARDS

Eligibility

Graduate students who are currently enrolled in a Faculty of Health Sciences program are eligible for these awards. 

Deadline

The deadline for receipt of graduate student nomination materials is 4:00pm on March 25th, 2020.  Completed nominations should be sent by email in PDF format to Health Sciences Graduate Studies at fhsgrad@mcmaster.ca.  Only completed nomination forms and the material provided will be considered by the Selection Committee.  All information, including nomination forms, will be kept confidential.

Teaching Assistant Excellence Award

This award is for graduate students who, in their work as a teaching assistant, have demonstrated excellence in their teaching contributions. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the faculty supervisor(s) of the course that the graduate student supported as a teaching assistant. These letters should outline the reason for the nomination and can be supplemented by copies of teaching evaluations and additional letters of support from students.

Graduate Student Publication Award

This award is to recognize outstanding publication achievements of graduate students in areas of health science research. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the supervisor and other faculty members that describe the outstanding publication achievements of the individual and 2) a copy of the trainee's CV that details their publication record.  

Graduate Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award

This award is for graduate students in areas of health science who have demonstrated innovation and entrepreneurship in their studies, such as making an outstanding discovery, patent, evidence-based practice or knowledge translation. Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee, and judged based on both demonstrated originality and significance. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the supervisor and other faculty members that describe the individual's outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship, and 2) a copy of the trainee's CV.

Graduate Student Leadership Award

This award recognizes graduate students in areas of health science who have made outstanding contributions to the broader community, by leading graduate student initiatives. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in leadership and generosity in initiatives to improve the community for other trainees. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from students, faculty and/or staff that detail the reason for the nomination, and 2) a copy of the trainee's CV.

HSGSF Impact Award *NEW*

The HSGSF would like to recognize and award at least four Health Sciences graduate students who demonstrate having a significant impact on the academic or professional community given their excellence in research, scholarly work or practicum contributions. Contributions recognized may include but are not limited to original published work, key research contributions deemed inventive in nature, or an innovative approach to completing their practicum placement that significantly impacts or has the potential to impact the larger community. Please see the nomination form for nomination criteria. Applications will be peer-reviewed by a selection committee comprised of HSGSF members.

HSGSF Excellence in Open Communication and Collaboration Award

The HSGSF would like to recognize graduate students in Health Sciences and affiliated Interdisciplinary graduate programs who demonstrate open communication and collaboration in their research. This award recognizes contributions of graduate students who seek to expand communication and collaborative research opportunities across graduate programs, departments and/or disciplines. This award requires a nomination form, CV and a minimum of one letter of support. Applications will be peer-reviewed by a selection committee comprised of HSGSF members.

Postdoctoral Fellows

Health Sciences Graduate Programs invites nominations for Postdoctoral Fellow (Category B) Awards. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee and the award recipients will be celebrated at the Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Plenary Awards Reception.

CATEGORY B - POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW AWARDS

Eligibility

PDFs who were in an area of health science research between January 2019 and the present are eligible for consideration.

Deadline

The deadline for receipt of postdoctoral fellow nomination materials is 4:00pm on March 25th, 2020.  Completed nominations should be sent by email in PDF format to HSGS at fhsgrad@mcmaster.ca.  Only completed nomination forms and the material provided will be considered by the Selection Committee.  All information, including nomination forms, will be kept confidential.

Postdoctoral Fellow Outstanding Achievement Award

Individuals in their final year of postdoctoral training in areas of health science research are eligible for nomination. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the supervisor and other faculty members or trainees that describe the outstanding achievements of the trainee, and 2) a copy of the trainee's CV. Please note: individuals who were in their final year of training between January 2019 and March 2020 are eligible.

Program Awards for Graduate Students

The Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs and affiliated Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs are invited to select recipients for a third category of awards for graduate students.This award does not require a nomination form.

Inquiries from interested registered graduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences or FHS interdisciplinary programs (Biomedical Engineering, Global Health, eHealth, Health Management, Health Policy and Neuroscience) should be directed to the relevant Assistant Dean or Program Director who can advise as to whether they are being considered for the awards noted below.

CATEGORY C - GRADUATE PROGRAM AWARDS

Eligibility

Graduate Students who have been registered in good standing in an FHS or affiliated Interdisciplinary program are eligible. 

Deadline

The deadline for receipt of all graduate program award winners is 4:00pm on March 18th, 2020. Graduate Programs are asked to submit the names and email addresses of all student award winners to HSGS, at fhsgrad@mcmaster.ca.

Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs Outstanding Achievement Award

This award recognizes graduate students in a Master's or Doctoral program who have made outstanding achievements, as judged by their graduate program. This award may given to no more than 5% of all students in a Master's or Doctoral program affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences.

FHS Faculty Awards

CATEGORY D - FACULTY AWARDS

The Health Sciences Graduate Student Federation (HSGSF) and Faculty of Health Sciences Postdoctoral Association (FHSPDA), in partnership with the Health Sciences Graduate Studies Office, are accepting nominations for three awards to recognize faculty members in Health Sciences who excel in teaching and/or supervision. These awards will require a nomination form. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee comprised of members of the HSGSF and/or FHSPDA and will be publicly recognized at the Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Plenary Awards Reception.

Eligibility

These awards are for faculty members in the Faculty of Health Sciences who have demonstrated outstanding supervision of graduate students in Health Sciences Graduate Programs. Nominees cannot receive this award if they have received one within the past 3 years.

FHSPDA Excellence in PDF Supervision Award

These awards are for faculty members in the Faculty of Health Sciences who have demonstrated outstanding mentorship/supervision of postdoctoral fellows. Nominees cannot receive this award if they have received one within the past 3 years.

HSGSF Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award

These awards are for faculty members in the Faculty of Health Sciences who have demonstrated excellence in teaching in Health Sciences Graduate Programs. Nominees cannot receive an award if they have received one within the past 3 years.

Additional Awards for Excellence

The Faculty of Health Sciences is committed to supporting and increasing the recognition of research excellence among individuals in graduate or postdoctoral training. These additonal Awards for Excellence are available to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows who have been traditionally under-represented in health science research within Canada, including individuals from racialized communities and internationally-trained individuals.

Eligibility

Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows in areas of health science research who have been in training between January 2019 and the present are eligible for these awards. 

Deadline

The deadline for receipt of all nomination materials is 4:00pm on March 25th, 2020.  Completed nominations should be sent by email in PDF format to Health Sciences Graduate Studies at fhsgrad@mcmaster.ca.  Only completed nomination forms and the material provided will be considered by the Selection Committee.  All information, including nomination forms, will be kept confidential.

Awards for Excellence – Health Sciences Diversity Graduate Student and PDF Awards

The Faculty of Health Sciences is committed to supporting and increasing the recognition of research excellence among individuals in graduate or postdoctoral training.  This commitment includes particular recognition of individuals from racialized communities that have been traditionally under-represented in the field of health science in Canada, including Aboriginal and African-heritage learners.  Individuals from the aforementioned communities who are training as a PDF in a field of health sciences research at McMaster, or as graduate students in an area of health science research, are eligible for consideration.  These awards require self-identification for eligibility.

Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the supervisor and other faculty members that describe the outstanding research achievements of the individual and 2) a copy of the trainee's CV.

Awards for Excellence — International Trainee Awards for Excellence

The Faculty of Health Sciences is committed to supporting and increasing the recognition of research excellence among internationally-trained individuals who are pursuing either postdoctoral training in a field of health sciences research at McMaster, or a graduate degree in an area of health science research. 

Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the supervisor and other faculty members that describe the outstanding research achievements of the individual and 2) a copy of the trainee's CV.
