Monica Augustyniak
Monica Augustyniak, FT
Monica Augustyniak is a recent graduate from the University of Guelph, who completed a major in biomedical science and a minor in business administration. She is motivated to develop innovative ideas to improve health care services and interventions that help individuals lead healthy lifestyles and achieve optimal wellbeing. She is excited to pursue this endeavour by completing her master’s degree in public health and working within interdisciplinary teams of experts. Besides her academic interests, Monica loves to travel and engage in philosophic discussions. Her favourite pastimes are dance, nature walks and photography.
Tejan Baldeh
Tejan Baldeh, FT
Tejan Baldeh is a research scientist and Melvin R. Goodes Scholar with a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences (Microbiology Specialization) from Queen’s University. He is currently completing a master’s degree in public health (thesis) at McMaster University. Since 2013, Tejan has worked as a research assistant at McMaster University’s Department of Health Research Methodology, Evidence & Impact (formerly Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics). In 2016, he completed a research project at Public Health Ontario-Kingston Laboratories. Specifically, Tejan has experience: (1) developing international clinical practice guidelines (2) conducting systematic reviews (3) using GRADE methodology and creating published GRADE teaching materials for guideline developers (4) conducting mixed methods research (5) conducting microbial water assessments.

Jennifer Friesen, PT
Jennifer graduated from McMaster University in 2010 with an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Sociology. Since graduating, Jennifer has worked as a Community Developer in Hamilton. She has now returned to McMaster to study part-time while raising her two children. So far, Jennifer has enjoyed uncovering the intricacies of public health policies and how they affect daily life in the city. Jennifer’s research interests also include community engagement and food environments.

I am an academic family physician in Hamilton’s McMaster Family Health Team as well as a palliative care consultant through Hamilton Health Sciences. My undergraduate degree was an Honors Specialization in Health Sciences with Biology at Western University. Following this I completed medical school at the University of Ottawa, family medicine residency at McMaster University as well as a fellowship in palliative care at McMaster University. Outside of clinical medicine, my teaching and research interests include public health and population approaches to primary and palliative health care and leadership development of medical learners and clinicians.

Sarah Haalboom received her Honours Bachelor of Science in Biology from the College of Sustainability at Dalhousie University, where she gained research experience looking at food systems and rural community resilience. Her interest in the intersection between environmental health and societal wellbeing drew her to volunteer with Waterloo Region Public Health on a project advocating for bylaw changes to support access to healthy food. The diverse and dynamic world of public health inspired Sarah to pursue her MPH. She hopes to build expertise in the areas of health promotion, community engagement, and neighbourhood-level determinants of health.

Lin graduated from the University of Medical Sciences of Havana in 2016. During school time she encountered numerous challenges that have helped to shape her view of public health in medical practice. She has strong research interest in infectious diseases, with special interest on HIV/ AIDS and tuberculosis. She wishes to integrate her clinical background with public health research in both communicable and non-communicable diseases prevention.

Liz recently graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She became interested in public health during her consolidation placement with the Grey Bruce Health Unit Infectious Diseases program. During this placement, she completed a project which aimed to clarify the steps of identifying and treating tuberculosis in low-risk areas. Liz is currently working as a Research Assistant with Health Evidence and the McMaster Optimal Aging Portal where she compiles high-quality evidence to ensure older adults have access to trustworthy health information. Her major interests in public health include harms reduction and mental well-being; in the future, she hopes to pursue a career as a Public Health Nurse.

Anne graduated from McMaster University in 2015 with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She is concurrently completing Water Without Borders, a graduate diploma program through the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health. Anne discovered her passion for public health during her consolidation placement at Hamilton Public Health's Healthy Living Division, working with elementary schools in the HWDSB and HWCDSB. She is particularly interested in community programs that empower youth to address mental health. Anne is currently working as a Registered Nurse in long term care. She also organizes missions work in South Korea, leading an English summer camp program that engages children and youth in rural communities.

Shivali completed her undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Guelph. While there, she took a variety of courses in epidemiology and health communications, which sparked her interest in the MPH program at McMaster University. She is particularly interested in health promotion and knowledge translation. Other hobbies include hiking, baking, and writing.

Kimia completed her undergraduate degree from Queen’s University in 2016, earning her Honours B.Sc. in Life Sciences. Her experiences during her undergraduate degree volunteering in health advocacy groups fostered her interest in public health. As part of McMaster’s Master of Public Health Program, Kimia’s interests include epidemiology, health systems, and health economics. In particular, she interested in the use of evidence to reduce health inequities, make informed decisions, and ultimately improve population health. McMaster’s MPH program is providing Kimia the opportunity to further develop her knowledge, experience, and skills, which she looks forward to applying in her future endeavors.

Ruhi Kiflen graduated from University of Toronto in 2016 with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and Health Studies. In her fourth year, she worked with the Association of Local Public Health Agencies to explore how members on the Board of Health can influence the development of local by-laws. She joined the Masters of Public Health program due to her interests in the relationship between equity and health from a systems-level perspective. She is specifically interested in developing upstream interventions to improve heath outcomes at a population level. In the future, she is interested to work in disease surveillance and outbreak management. Some of her other interests include drawing, painting, hiking, and trying new kinds of food.

Vanessa earned her Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion from Dalhousie University in 2016. She completed an undergraduate thesis, which sparked her interest in quantitative research. She also developed a passion for public health while interning in the Population and Public Health Division at the Ministry of Health in British Columbia. Vanessa has worked as a Research Assistant at the Ontario HIV Treatment Network, and as a Research Coordinator for the Internationally Trained Medical Doctors Bridging Program. During her MPH degree, she will pursue a thesis related to social and contextual determinants of child health.

Isabella McNamara, FT
Isabella recently graduate with a degree in Chemistry, with Honors and a Minor in Biology from Smith College, Northampton, MA. Throughout her degree, she participated in a wide range of research projects and volunteered in a children’s hospital. Through these experiences, she become interested in epidemiology and public health. Isabella’s primary point of interest in public health is understanding burdens of disease and methods to prevent emergence and transmission of infectious diseases. For her thesis project, she will explore the burden of RSV in adults in Ontario. In the future, she hopes to attend medical school and and pursue a career in community medicine.

Aarani completed her undergraduate degree in the biological sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough in 2015. Through her interdisciplinary coursework at UofT, she developed an interest in understanding the role of environmental risk factors on human health, particularly in regards to climate change as it alters both urban and rural ecosystems. In the MPH program at McMaster, her interests in public health have expanded to include quantifying the influence of neighbourhood-level factors on health outcomes, developing effective community-based health promotion programs, and healthcare innovation.

Elena completed her B.Sc. in Physiology at McGill University in 2007. She went on to complete her M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Science at the University of Toronto 2009. She then went on to pursue her Medical Doctorate from McMaster University in 2011. She completed residency training in General Surgery at McMaster University in 2016. Currently she is working as a Clinical Scholar in the Department of General Surgery at McMaster University. Elena’s interest in public health lies in socioeconomic and racial disparities in cancer care outcomes and in global health. Elena has engaged in global outreach work initiatives in Bangladesh, Tobago, the Dominican Republic and Uganda.

Nickoy holds a BSC in Environmental Health from the University of Technology, Jamaica. He has a strong interest in the epidemiology of infectious diseases, with a special interest on tropical infectious diseases, and health promotion. Nickoy’s professional background spans 5 years working as an Environmental Health Inspector in western Jamaica in the areas of food safety, vector control and disease prevention. He was honoured in 2014 with the award of most outstanding Environmental Health Inspector in Jamaica 2015. Nickoy hopes to use the knowledge gained from the Master of Public health program and the Post-Graduate Diploma in Water, Environment and Health pursued through the United Nations University and McMaster to improve population and public health.

Grace recently graduated from McMaster University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology and a Minor in Business. Throughout her undergraduate studies, she volunteered in various health settings such as an exercise program for individuals with spinal cord injury, cardiac rehabilitation programs, and a geriatric research centre. Her experiences have helped her understand the importance of community health programs and sparked her drive to pursue a career in public health. Grace's research interests include health care for the aging population and preventing and managing chronic diseases using multi-modal strategies. Her goal is to promote health in a community setting through the implementation of programs and policy initiatives.

Ethan graduated from McGill University in 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Honors Immunology. His academic interests revolve around the etiology and prevention of infectious, communicable diseases. Through McMaster’s MPH program, Ethan hopes to develop a better understanding on how social inequalities impact the emergence of infectious disease. He eventually hopes to work for international aid agencies to develop, advocate, and implement action plans to control disease spread. Having previously worked as a health ambassador and peer educator, Ethan is also passionate towards healthy living and promoting mental health awareness. He intends to complete a research based practicum at the BC Centre for Disease Control evaluating the growing concerns behind antimicrobial resistance.

Andrea recently graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) Plattsburgh where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences and Chemistry. During her tenure at Plattsburgh, Andrea played four years of NCAA ice hockey for the women’s varsity team. While pursuing her undergraduate studies, she had the opportunity to participate in genetics research investigating the COL5A1 endurance gene in university athletes. She also completed an internship in the Emergency Care Center at the University of Vermont Champlain Valley Physician’s Hospital where she assisted in supporting the needs of patients with low socioeconomic status and high unemployment. This experience had a profound impact on Andrea and influenced her decision to pursue a career in public health. She is passionate about research, health promotion and the management of chronic diseases, and has a keen desire to make an impact on Canadian populations in her future public health career endeavours. As a member of the McMaster Women’s hockey team she currently volunteers weekly with the Skate the Dream Program affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hamilton.
