Welcome from the Director of Residency

Welcome to the website for the Division of Urology at McMaster University! This website provides details of the McMaster University Urology program, for medical students interested in applying, as well as for current residents. As Program Director, I am happy to answer any questions you may have and can be contacted through my office or through our Program Assistant Jen Caruk.

The McMaster Urology Residency Program is a five-year program, with the first two years encompassing rotations in urology, general surgery, radiology, pathology, and intensive care. The final three years are all urology rotations culminating in a final chief residency year. The rotations are located at St. Joseph’s Healthcare and the Hamilton Health Sciences Hospitals. Community urology rotations include options in Niagara, St. Catherine’s, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga or Toronto.

The teaching faculty staff includes 14 urologists with all areas of sub-specialty training, including uro-oncology, urolithiasis, neurogenic bladder, incontinence, female urology, benign prostate hypertrophy, infertility, erectile dysfunction, pediatric urology, urinary tract reconstruction, and renal transplantation.

The educational component of the program includes mandatory protected teaching time on Wednesday mornings, with Urology Grand Rounds every Wednesday at 7:30-8:30, and Urology School from 9am-12. Urology-Pathology-Radiology rounds occur regularly Thursday afternoons, and Cancer Centre tumor board rounds every second Tuesday from 4:30-5:30. Chief Resident Rounds are held every Friday from 7am-8am. Progam oral exams occur twice yearly every December and June, with all faculty involved in yearly OSCE-style exam for all residents every January. Written exams occur every November with the AUA in-service examination.

The Urology Residency Program research productivity has been extraordinary over the last number of years, with each resident involved in 2 research projects over the course of their residency culminating in a high publication rate. All faculty are very supportive of research projects with residents, with a high abstract acceptance rate at national and international meetings.

Graduates from our program have gone on to rewarding careers in Academia as well as Community practice, with Fellowship placements in national and international centres of excellence.

The biggest strength of the McMaster Urology residency program is the deep commitment of our faculty to the program, with resident education being the main priority of all of our young faculty. A definite family atmosphere prevails with all residents and faculty supportive of each other. Welcome to McMaster!
