Oncology Research Day
Amongst the participating divisions at the 6th annual Student Research Day, hosted by the Department of Oncology at the Juravinski Cancer Centre, on June 24, 2009, the Division of Urology was represented by resident Niki Kanaroglou, one of four participants from the Department of Surgery. While Niki was not among the awardees of the day, the Division would like to congratulate her for her oral presentation on, Anterior prostate biopsies reveal a sanctuary site of prostate cancer in patients with previous negative extended prostate biopsies.
From among the awardees, Dr. JP Lu, a basic scientist and PhD from Dr. Jehonathan Pinthus' research group, won Best Basic Science Poster for his study of Androgens induced oxidative stress and radiation resistance in prostate cancer cells through NADPH oxidase. The division would like to congratulate both Dr. Lu and his supervisor Dr. Pinthus on their success.
Other participants from the Department of Surgery included Dr. Valerie Francescutti from the General Surgery Division, and Isabella Mak, a graduate student in Dr. Michelle Gherts lab, who was runner-up for Best Basic Science Oral Presentation for her work on the Upregulation of MMP-13 via Runx2 in the stromal cell of giant cell tumour of bone.
Again, we would like to congratulate Dr. Lu, Dr. Niki Kanaroglou and their supervisor, Dr. Jehonathan Pinthus. The 7th annual Student Research Day is scheduled for June 23, 2010. The Division encourage and all urology residents doing oncology research to participate in next years competition.
