Welcome to the St Joseph's Swallowing Clinic Outpatient Rotation

The St Joseph's Swallowing Clinic at Mcmaster University offers an elective outpatient rotation as an educational initiative since June 2009.

Target

  • GI residents
  • General Internal medicine residents

Length of Time: 4 weeks, twice a week.

The main goal of this rotation is to get the residents familiarized and exposured with a variety of clinical scenarios related to swallowing disorders. At the end of the rotation the residents have to be able to go through a broad expectrum of differential diagnosis in order to establish a future plan for follow-up and treatment.

The multidisciplinary Swallowing Clinic works in principle as a fast tract assessment clinic optimizing resources. It is conducted jointly by an Internist/Gastroenterologist and a Speech-Language Pathologist.

The first clinical assessment is conducted in the Outpatient Clinic within the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and the VSS is performed with a Medical Radiation Technologist in the Department of Diagnostic Imaging.
