Dr. Stephen Kelly, Associate Chair, Education

Dr. Kelly brings extensive experience at both the MD undergraduate and postgraduate levels to his role as Associate Chair, Education for the Department of Surgery. He previously served as Residency Program Director for the Division of General Surgery and as Surgical Clerkship Director at McMaster and Clinical Teaching Unit Director for the General Surgery Residency Program at the McMaster University Medical Centre site of Hamilton Health Sciences.

Faculty Profile: Ranil Sonnadara, PhD

Dr. Ranil SonnadaraDr. Ranil Sonnadara is a multidisciplinary researcher and emerging scholar in the areas of surgical education and simulation who joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery as an Assistant Professor (Part-Time) in 2012. Dr. Sonnadara maintains an active research program focused on motor learning, performance, the mechanisms underlying the acquisition of new skills, and the development of novel methods for evaluating those skills. He previously held an academic appointment at the University of Toronto, where he played an integral role in the deveopment of a new competency based Orthopaedic Surgery residency program. The Toronto Orthopaedic Boot Camp for first year orthopaedic residents would go on to receive the Association for Surgical Education's 2013 Award for Innovation in Surgical Education. Dr. Sonnadara's expertise in this area will be of great assistance as McMaster's Department of Surgery proceeds with its implementation of the competency based education approach to resident learning mandated under the new Royal College Competence By Design initiative. To that end, Dr. Sonnadara will run the Department's newly created Office of Education Science, under the leadership of Dr. S. Kelly.

Dr. Sonnadara also serves as special advisor to McMaster's Vice-President of Research and International Affairs, is head of Research and High Performance Computing for the university, and is an associate member of the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour.
