On July 7th, Dr. Mehran Anvari was presented with an award for innovation in biology and medicine for his work with IGAR at the NASA-International Space Station Research and Development Awards. Dr. Anvari used the robotic technology that was used to create the Canadarm, Canadarm2 and Dextre for the Canadian Space Agency as a method to better diagnose and treat breast cancer. Dr. Anvari used this technology to develop an image guided robot called IGAR, which is used to perform detailed breast biopsies and destroy lesions in a less invasive, quicker and less painful procedure. Here is a look at the NASA-International Space Station Research and Development Awards Ceremony and photos from the conference. CBC news also did a feature on the award presentation to Dr. Anvari.
