Harriet MacMillan

Profile

I am a pediatrician and psychiatrist with a major research interest in children’s and women’s mental health, and Aboriginal health generally. I am the inaugural holder of the David R. (Dan) Offord Chair in Child Studies. My research activities include investigation of the epidemiology of violence against women and children as well as evaluation of interventions aimed at prevention of child maltreatment and violence against women. My research activities overlap with my clinical activities which include being a member of the Child Advocacy and Assessment Program (CAAP) at McMaster Children’s Hospital. This multidisciplinary program aims, through research, teaching and clinical activities, to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with child maltreatment.

Current projects include the following:

  • Completion of a randomized controlled trial evaluating the effectiveness of public health nurse home visitation in preventing the recurrence of child abuse and neglect (Family Connections Study).
  • Analysis of data from a longitudinal cohort study, supported by the National Alliance for Research in Schizophrenia and Depression, investigating hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis dysfunction following child maltreatment and its role in the etiology of major depressive disorder (The Youth Mood Project).
  • Investigation of health impacts across the lifespan including violence against women, child maltreatment, dating violence and abuse of older persons with support from a CIHR New Emerging Team (NET) grant.
  • Evaluation of screening for violence against women in health care settings with a grant from the Ontario Women’s Health Council.
  • Participating in a CIHR-funded initiative, the ACADRE program to facilitate trainees in Aboriginal health research having enhanced opportunities for research training.
