International Medical Graduate (IMG)
Residency Training
Visa/Work authorization Permit (expected to return to country of citizenship)
Visa applicants coming to Ontario to complete a residency program will require the following:
- Successful completion of the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination
- Medical school/degree listed in the current Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER) directory
- Source of funding (sponsorship) through a foreign government, hospital, or other agency
IMG’s who are sponsored by a foreign government agency may apply for residency programs but we require that a contractual agreement be arranged between the agency and the University. This agreement requires that the sponsoring agency pay an annual academic fee to the University as well as pay the Resident’s salary/benefits, call stipend, etc. as per the provincial contractual agreement (PAIRO). At the conclusion of training, the trainee is expected to return to his/her country of citizenship.
Currently McMaster has sponsorship contracts in place with the agencies listed below. Note - this list is subject to change.
- Bahrain Defence Force Royal Medical Services
- Embassy of the State of Kuwait (in Washington)
- Oman Medical Specialty Board
- Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau (in Ottawa)
- United Arab Emirates Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (in Ottawa)
Applicants must apply to the University through their sponsorship bureau and not directly to the programs.
The bureaus submit residency applications to the Postgraduate Medical Education Office by August 31. In early September the residency applications are then distributed to the programs for consideration of the next July admission.
Sponsored fellowship applications are sent to the programs at the time they are received by the Postgrad Office from the sponsorship bureau.
Applicants selected for interviews will be notified through their bureau.
