Pediatric Clerkship Program

Welcome to Pediatrics

The pediatrics clerkship rotation is a six-week rotation during which students have exposure to both ambulatory and inpatient pediatric care. The student inpatient experience often focuses on children with more severe or chronic diseases. Education about health maintenance, disease prevention, common illnesses, focused interviewing and clinical problem-solving as well as knowledge of community resources is provided by using community-based general pediatrics office experiences. Subspecialty clinics provide a unique experience to gain an intimate understanding of complex childhood conditions.

General orientation on Day 1 of the rotation will reintroduce the student to important aspects of clinical skills in pediatrics. Resource sessions consisting of 15 faculty lead teaching sessions will occur weekly. A series of 20 e-learning modules, which comprehensively cover the core objectives in pediatrics, will be completed during the six week rotation.

What's New

The Pediatric Clerkship is seeking just two more Tutors for 2012, Aug 28 & Sept 4 or Dec 4 & 11. All new Faculty as well as seasoned contributors are encouraged to participate. The responsibility of the Tutor is to offer 2 tutorial sessions (on Tuesday afternoon 2:00 – 4:30) to a group of 6-8 students. The tutor will receive a detailed "tutor guide" outlining the cases for discussion and applicable resources. The students will organize a mid- rotation review session with the tutor. This will consist of a telephone or in person discussion about progress to that point in the rotation. The final responsibility of the tutor is to collate assessments made of students throughout the rotation for the purpose of providing a final rotation evaluation.

To reserve your date for tutoring, please contact Kimberly Babin, Program Coordinator (pedclrk@mcmaster.ca), or Dr. Karen McAssey, Pediatric Clerkship Director (mcassek@mcmaster.ca).

We would be pleased to answer any questions.
