Christine Wekerle and Ben Klein recently had an article published in the summer edition of the Journal of the Ontario Association of Children's Aid Societies.  Ben worked on this topic during his fellowship in developmental pediatrics with Olaf Kraus de Camargo and Jan Willem Gorter as his co-supervisors.  Read the published article:

Peter Rosenbaum and Jan Willem Gorter have published a paper outlining the ‘F-words' in child neurodisability: function, family, fitness, fun, friends and future!  They package these ‘fundamental' concepts into the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (the ICF).  Read the abstract:

THE 24th ANNUAL NATIONAL PEDIATRIC RESIDENT AND FELLOW RESEARCH COMPETITION, Winnipeg 2012.

The Manitoba Institute of Child Health (The Research Division of the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba, Inc.), along with the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, University of Manitoba, hosts an annual Pediatric Resident and Fellow Research Competition which is open to all Pediatric Departments across Canada.  Please click here for the guidelines for entry into the competition. 

 

Anthony Chan

Congratulations to Dr. Anthony Chan on the recent announcement of his role as the McMaster Children's Hospital/Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Chair in Pediatric Thrombosis and Hemostasis.  Dr. Chan is the first incumbent and will hold this role for a 5 year term.   As Chair, Dr. Chan will help in the development of a collaborative research program between McMaster Children's Hospital and McMaster University, in the area of thrombosis and hemostatis.

Elyanne Ratcliffe has been granted approval for funding (NIF)

Congratulations to Elyanne Ratcliffe has been granted approval for funding in the amount of $50,000 for the grant application to the Hamilton Health Sciences' New Investigator Fund (NIF) for the project entitled "Pilot Study To Determine The Influence Of The Microbiota On The Development Of The Enteric Nervous System"

Anthony Chan granted project grant from Pfizer

Congratulations to  Anthony Chan ( co – PI ), Gonzalo ( PI ) in obtaining a project grant ( $75,000 ) from Pfizer Canada to study inhibitor development in hemophilia.

The Status Epilepticus Therapeutic Guideline Committee

(M. Duffett-Clinical Pharmacy, J. Gilleland- Critical Care, K. Fitzpatrick- General Pediatrics, A. Kam- Emergency Medicine and R. Ramachandran Nair- Neurology) has finalized the pharmacological guideline for management of pediatric status epilepticus. The committee was able to incorporate several suggestions from divisional members. Drs. Holland and Watts named Life Members of CPS

Fusch appointed Chair in Neonatology

Dr. Christoph Fusch has been appointed the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation Chair/Jack Sinclair Chair in Neonatology. An event to announce the new endowed chair was held on January 25.

CIHR grant awarded to McMaster pediatricians for cross-cultural study on extremely low birth weight infants

Dr. Louis Schmidt, from the Faculty of Science and Health Sciences, Drs. Saroj Saigal and  Katherine Morrison from the Department of Pediatrics, and Drs. Michael Boyle and Peter Szatmari, from the Department of Psychiatry and CE&B, McMaster University, have received funding for a new initiative from CIHR - a Canadian Finnish Consortium. The study, ‘Challenges after preterm birth from infancy to young adulthood,' will focus on the mental health and metabolic sequelae of former extremely low birth weight infants, now in their 30s, who have been followed since infancy by Saigal and colleagues. This will be a first cross-cultural study to adulthood of infants who were very premature in an international collaboration with Finnish investigators. The funding amount for the Canadian component is $1.4 million over four years. For more information, click Canadian-Finnish Consortium receives CIHR funding.

Barr receives prestigious Rotary award

Congratulations to Dr. Christoph Fusch

Dr. Christoph Fusch has been accepted to the Society for Pediatric Research. He will be formally inducted at the SPR annual meeting next spring.

And the winner is...

Congratulations to Dr. Lennox Huang, Diane Norman, Donna LaForce and Krishna Anchala for their winning poster "Lean Methodology Combined with In-Situ High-Fidelity Simulation to Evaluate Pediatric Emergency Department Design." The poster will be presented at the 10th annual International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare held in Arizona in January.

Congratulations to Dr. Peter Szatmari 

Dr. Szatmari is the recipient of the George Tarjan Award for Contributions in Developmental Disabilities from the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). This award recognizes a child and adolescent psychiatrist who has made significant contributions to the understanding or care of those with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.  

Congratulations to Dr. Ivan Stevic

Dr. Ivan Stevic, a PhD student in Dr. Anthony Chan's laboratory, has received a 2009 Bayer Thrombosis Research Award from the Thrombosis Interest Group of Canada (TIGC). He has also been given a Travel Award from the American Society of Hematology.

Two faculty members received prestigious awards

Dr. Saroj Saigal has recently been awarded the Landmark Award PDF for her work on the long-term outcomes of children and young adults following preterm birth. Dr. Jack Sinclair was presented with the Apgar Award PDF which recognizes an individual in the field of perinatal pediatrics who has contributed to excellence in patient care, research or teaching. Both awards were be presented at the 2009 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Atkinson appointed to INMD Advisory Board

Congratulations to Dr. Stephanie Atkinson, on being appointed to the Advisory Board of the CIHR's Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes. She will serve a three-year term. For more information, please click CIHR's INMD Update: September 2009 PDF.

“FACILITATORS NEEDED” Faculty of Health Sciences is organizing an Interprofessional education event featuring a symposium and small group sessions on professionalism in the Interprofessional context.

Friday, January 27, 2012 from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at the Hamilton Convention Centre. Please click here for more details. Over 700 students from all of the health professions programs in the Faculty will be participating in this event.

The Inside Ride

Members from the Department of Pediatrics teamed up in a fun, high energy, indoor cycling, fundraising event that raised much needed funding to make a meaningful difference in the lives of kids and teens living with cancer during the MacKids' Inside Ride on October 20th.
