Topic: Bringing Evidence to Complementary & Alternative Medical Therapies for Children with Cancer

the Waldemar J. Kaminski Endowed Chair of Pediatrics at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and Professor of Pediatrics and Division Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at Oishei Children’s Hospital and the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

Complementary treatment approaches are increasingly requested by children with cancer and survivors to reduce side effects of conventional cancer treatment, enhance health-related quality of life, and improve clinical outcomes. A summary of recent clinical studies specifically evaluating these approaches in the pediatric oncology setting will be presented, along with the challenges in performing this type of research. Examples of how complementary therapies may be integrated into clinical care for children with cancer, especially for symptom management will also be described.
