And You Think You're Having a Busy Day

Dr. Karen McAssey, Department of Pediatrics, McMaster University

If you are feeling busy, you might want to sit down for this: Dr. Karen McAssey has been a member of the
provincial task force regarding provincial guidelines for diabetes care and has participated in outreach
clinics. S he currently provides expertise within the Network of Ontario Pediatric Diabetes Programs, serves as
the principle investigator for the Hamilton Health Sciences’ site of the TrialNet Study, and directs the Pediatric
Calcium and Bone Disorders Clinic at McMaster Children’s Hospital. And, if that weren’t enough, McAssey is
also the pediatric clerkship director for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster. All of this,
of course, in addition to her work as a clinician, through which she provides care for children with endocrine
disorders, including the timing or regulation of puberty, excess or delayed growth, and thyroid and adrenal
overactivity or underactivity.

But above all though, McAssey is perhaps most noted for something that may sound less exalted than her
other pursuits but is actually perhaps her most important activity: teaching, and providing leadership for the
undergraduate program.
