Spring Results - Clinician focus group

8 clinicians participated in the focus group held in the Spring. The major themes that arose from the focus group discussion were as follows:

A) Clinician expectations:

-Surprised by students: lack of preparation, youth, lack of interest
-Clinicians who expected nothing from students were positively surprised
-Clinicians expected students to have background knowledge in their field or of CCAC/services

B) Challenges faced during placement:

-Variability in the quality of student (some were excellent others not great)
-Concerns over student’s behaviour
-Placements in school settings difficult to coordinate
-Placements with students made home visits longer/more difficult
-Issues surrounding communication with students
-Difficulty in coordinating schedules
-Helping  students overcome misconceptions about profession

C) Patient selection

-Clinicians selected patients who consented
-Clinicians selected patients who would be interesting to students

D) Suggestions for future placements/Take home messages

-Placements were valuable experiences for students
-Students should receive background lecture on CCAC and how they are part of a team
-Feedback on readings-not all readings helpful
-Debriefing sessions after placements helped students get the most out of the experience
-Clinicians wanted paid/protected time for placements
-Feedback on timing of placements
-Suggestions on the number of students
-School placements-eliminate consents
