Role of the Advisor

  1. Meet with the resident every 3 months, including at the commencement of the Residency Program, as a minimum.
  2. Review general objectives of the program and the resident’s progress towards meeting them. This includes review of the resident’s self-monitored narrative log of experience in rotations.
  3. Help resident develop and review specific objectives.
  4. Formulate plans with the resident for obtaining experiences necessary to meet the objectives.
  5. Review all rotation evaluation forms received by the resident in the program.
  6. Ensure appropriate documentation in the resident’s evaluation file, including completion of evaluation forms.
  7. Be available to the resident for debriefing after rotations, for educational trouble shooting, as well as general support and advice.
  8. Bring unsatisfactory or borderline (needs improvement) overall ratings to the attention of the unit evaluation subcommittee.
  9. Work with the resident and Program Committee in devising any necessary remedial training.
  10. Provide guidance to the resident or future career planning.
