HHS Library Services: Overview of Services

There are hospital libraries at the General and Henderson sites.  Our hospital library collections include a range of texts, journals and databases which reflect the programs and services at each site.  All staff can also access the Health Sciences Library at McMaster University.  The libraries are members of the Hamilton & District Network which enable a wide range of resources to be available for Hamilton Health Sciences staff to support clinical, educational, research and patient educational initiatives.  To learn more about our libraries, please feel free to drop by or call us at the following extensions: Henderson Library ext. 42009, General Library ext. 44246.  You may also check our website: www.hamiltonhealthsciences.ca/sites/library/

The Library Services team provides the following standard services to the Hamilton Health Sciences community.  We welcome feedback from our patrons since we continuously evaluate our services to better meet their needs.

Reference
Customized information solutions are designed for specific needs.  Sources consulted may include on-site and local collections, electronic databases, Internet sites.  Contact your library site.

Literature Search
A number of prominent databases are available via the “web library” at all Hamilton Health Sciences libraries at no charge.  Some of these databases are:

  1. Medline (Ovid)
  2. CINAHL
  3. HealthStar
  4. Ageline
  5. Cochrane Library
  6. PsycInfo

Search instructions for these databases is given on an individual or group basis at all libraries.  Call or e-mail your site library to book an appointment.  For information not indexed in the “Web Library” databases online searching by experiences professional searchers is available.  Contact your site library to discuss your requirements.  There is a charge for online searches.

Document Delivery
Health libraries in Hamilton belong to the Hamilton & District Health Library Network (HDLN).  Each library has specific collections strengths and resources are shared among all partners.  Books, journals and audiovisual material may be requested on loan.  Most items take 24-48 hours to arrive.  The libraries also have access through HDLN to resources at the McMaster University Libraries.  There is a charge for photocopies obtained from McMaster.

Interlibrary Loan
Books and journal articles which are not available locally can be requested through Interlibrary Loan.  Source libraries include university, hospital and government libraries across Canada, and the National Library of Medicine in the U.S.  There is a minimum charge for Interlibrary Loan photocopies; please see library staff for details.

Orientation
An introduction to each library and its in-house collection is available for individuals or small groups.  It is strongly advised that new staff and residents should participate in this program as the libraries are an integral to research support at HHS.  In-service orientation focusing on resources for specific groups can be arranged with library staff at each site.

Journal List
A union list of locally available health-related journals is published jointly by the HDLN libraries.  Ask for the “pink book” at your site library.  The HHS library staff is responsible for the currency of this publication, with the collaboration of other member libraries.

Photocopiers
Copiers are available in each library for patron use.  There is no photocopy service.  Ask your site library for information on photocopy charges.
