Undergraduate - Year Three (Clerkship) - Tutorial Two

Tutorials

The following is an outline of the curriculum for the two tutorial sessions, see below for the goals of each tutorial.

  1. Have a basic overview and understanding of the history as well as current practices of palliative care locally, nationally and internationally.
  2. Develop a basic approach using the following categories: Assessment, Etiology, Management (Pharmacologic and Non-pharmacologic) for the following problems:
    • Pain
    • Nausea and Vomiting
    • Constipation
    • Dyspnea
    • Delirium and Confusion
    • Fatigue and Weakness
  3. Develop a framework for the discussion and delivery of bad news.
  4. Develop a framework for ethical decision making.
  5. Develop an awareness of normal grief, bereavement and suffering.
  6. Develop a framework for setting goals of care and care planning.
  7. Enhance understanding of verbal and nonverbal communication and communication techniques.

Tutorial 2:

Goals:

  1. Debrief from site visit half day experiences-thoughts, feelings, interactions (30 minutes)
  2. Communication- Styles, breaking bad news, nonverbal, etc (30 minutes)
  3. Ethical decision making- Framework, scenarios, treatment decisions etc (30 minutes)
  4. Setting Goals of Care- Social/Cultural/Spiritual factors, doctor's role etc (20 minutes)
  5. Care planning- In hospital/at home, community resources, etc (20 minutes)
  6. Death Awareness- Personal reflections, exercises, coroner, certificates (20 minutes)
  7. Grief and Bereavement- Normal grief, resources, roles etc (15 minutes)
  8. Suffering- Components of, approaches to, understanding of etc (15 minutes)

As stated previously, students will present the pre-assigned topics at Session 2 (see interactive teaching session).
