Undergraduate - Year Three (Clerkship) - Site Visits
Site Visit:
Students locally are assigned to a clinical setting on a set date. Distributive sites will arrange their site visit dates and times with the local palliative care preceptors. The purpose of the site visits is to allow the students to observe Hospice/Palliative Care services being delivered in a consistent and focused fashion by an interdisciplinary team. Students should come to the half days with a sense of their own learning needs. Students are expected to become part of the daily routine of the setting during their half-day. They are also expected to take on clinical roles and tasks according to the nature of the setting i.e. assessing patients, participating in family meetings, joining team members when seeing patients and participating in team rounds etc.
Goals of the Site Visit:
- To have an opportunity to observe a multidisciplinary approach to palliative care.
- Develop an awareness of the social, cultural and spiritual elements involved in setting goals of care and care planning.
- Develop an awareness of hospital, community, and family needs and resources for discharge and care planning.
