Academic Information - Electives

There is one elective during the year (see rotation schedule).  Fellows will plan with the Program Director about selective choices, based on interest and self-assessment by the Fellow.

Elective time provides the Fellow with an opportunity to achieve some or all of the following objectives.  Electives are planned in collaboration with the Program Director.  Examples of electives include:

  • HIV/AIDS Palliative Care
  • Palliative Care Program in another city, country.
  • Pediatric Palliative Care.
  • Other areas of interest to the fellow.

Principle #1: The family physician is a skilled clinician

  • To enhance knowledge and skills in a focused area of practice

Principle #2: Family medicine is a community-based discipline

  • To gain experience in an area of scholarship or administration relevant to palliative care (e.g. research, administration, public relations, advocacy)

Principle #3: The family physician is a resource to a defined practice population

  • To evaluate specific areas of practice for purposes of career planning
  • To prepare oneself for future practice in a focused clinical area
  • To gain exposure to other areas/aspects of palliative care not yet covered by training to date
