CHSRF/CIHR Regional Training Centres*

The Regional Training Centres are one of the major initiatives that collectively make up the Capacity for Applied and Developmental Research and Evaluation (CADRE) program. There are four Regional Training Centres: the Western Regional Training Centre (WRTC), the Ontario Training Centre (OTC), the Atlantic Regional Training Centre (ARTC), and the FERASI Centre in Quebec.

The centres are designed to increase the number of well-qualified applied health services and nursing researchers at the master's and PhD level and are intended to complement the infrastructure established through the programs of the CHSRF/CIHR chairs. By grouping various post-secondary institutions, departments, faculties and decision-makers, the centres have established applied research training programs that are truly interdisciplinary. Emphasis is placed on the creation of opportunities to share issues and ideas through student placements with decision-making organizations. These placements also ensure that awareness and understanding of decision makers' concerns are included in the training experience.

The centres have broad guidelines with regard to program development. The institutions involved have drawn on their particular strengths to build a single training program available to students in all locations. Common or equivalent courses are identified at the different institutions and new ones are made available through the centre to all institutions through various instructional modalities (onsite and online). Students usually gather at least once a year to meet and discuss their studies and research.
