Alba DiCensoholds the CHSRF/CIHR Chair in Advanced Practice Nursing and is a Professor in the School of Nursing and the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University. She is also the Director of the Ontario Training Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (OTC). Dr. DiCenso’s mandate during her 10-year Nursing Chair is to increase Canada’s capacity of nurse researchers who will conduct applied research related to advanced practice nursing (APNs) that serves the needs of managers and policy makers in the health sector. Her primary research area is the introduction and evaluation of advanced practice nurses (including nurse practitioners) in primary and tertiary care settings.
Dr. DiCenso led the research that introduced neonatal nurse practitioners into tertiary level neonatal intensive care units in Ontario. She was the lead author of the Discussion Paper that preceded the provincial government’s announcement to introduce nurse practitioners in Ontario in 1994, has conducted a needs assessment to determine the numbers needed in each type of primary care setting and the specific role of the NP in each of these settings, has evaluated the university-based consortium approach to educating primary care NPs, has studied NP practice patterns, and oversaw a project to examine the barriers and facilitators to the integration of NPs in primary health care in Ontario. In 2004, Minister George Smitherman announced the formation of the NP Integration Task Team, co-chaired by Dr. DiCenso and Dr. Sue Matthews, Provincial Chief Nursing Officer, to oversee the implementation of all 29 recommendations emerging from this last study. From 1998 to 2003, Dr. DiCenso was the lead editor of the Evidence-Based Nursing Journal and she is the lead editor of a recently published textbook: Evidence-Based Nursing: A Guide to Clinical Practice published by Elsevier.
