Funding Opportunities from the School of Nursing

McMaster School of Nursing currently offers two internal funding opportunities to faculty members to support their research: the Niemeier Fund and the Patricia Tauber Nursing Research Fund Competition. Eligibility criteria, application requirements, review process and important dates for Niemeier funding are described in detail.

  • Niemeier Fund
  • Patricia Tauber Nursing Research Fund Competition

Niemeier Fund

Purpose:

The Niemeier Fund was established in honour of Dr. Otto W. Niemeier, a prominent member of the medical community, who was interested in advancing educational opportunities for nurses. The fund is intended to enhance the scholarship and research capabilities of faculty.

Eligibility:

All full-time and part-time faculty members of the School of Nursing are eligible to apply. All projects must have relevance to nursing education, knowledge and/or practice. The following activities will be considered for funding:

  • Preparation of an application for external funding
  • Conduct of a small research project
  • Secondary analyses of existing data
  • Development of a seminar/workshop

Review Process and Evaluation Criteria:

Each application will be assessed by two reviewers [who will be blind to the identity of the applicant(s)], appointed by Diana Sherifali. Review criteria are as follows:

  • Is the proposal congruent with the purposes of the Niemeier Fund?
  • How relevant is the proposal to nursing education, knowledge and/or practice?
  • How clear is the goal of the project?
  • How realistic is the goal given the time period and funding requested?
  • To what extent will the proposed activities allow the applicant to achieve the goal?
  • How sound is the proposed methodology or description of scholarly activities?
  • How suitable is the plan for evaluation of outcomes or knowledge transfer and exchange?
  • To what extent has the budget been justified?
  • Does the proposal pose possible ethical concerns?
  • Has appropriate approval been gained for any and all resources being used? (e.g., agency approval)

Awards:

Niemeier Fund awards are for a 1-year period. A single award will not normally exceed $2,000.00. All projects will require ethics approval before funds are released. When the successful applicant has obtained ethics approval in writing and has forwarded a copy of the approval to Diana Sherifali, a temporary account administered by the School of Nursing will be set up. By accepting the funds, the applicant agrees to submit a report to Diana Sherifali, no later than three months after the end of the grant. Please note that projects involving undergraduate or graduate students also must receive permission from the Undergraduate Nursing Education Committee (UNEC) or the Coordinator of the Nursing Graduate Program.
