Frequently Asked Questions

How many awards will be given out each round?

This is dependent on the quality and quantity of applications received.

Are the Fellowships located at McMaster?

Not necessarily. They are located within the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University, which includes affiliations with academic hospitals within Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. Please visit schools and departments associated with the Faculty for more information.

Do I need to pick a supervisor ahead of time?

Yes. All candidates are required to apply to work under a faculty member in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Candidates must communicate with their proposed supervisor in advance of applying to confirm the "Confirmation of Supervisor Support" requirement of the application. The proposed supervisor(s) that a candidate lists in their application must be different than the individual(s) who supervised / are supervising their PhD.

When is the deadline for applications?

The application deadline for the latest round of awards was April 1, 2012. Please check back regularly for the next round of awards.

Can I submit my application in person? By mail? By fax?

No. Applications are only to be submitted online. Reference letters must be scanned and e-mailed to mgdfa@mcmaster.ca. Please ensure that letters of reference are received, along with your electronic submission, before the application deadline.

Only candidates who are (a) external to McMaster, or (b) internal students who have yet to begin postdoctoral studies at McMaster, or (c) internal students who began their postdoctoral studies at McMaster no earlier than 10 months before the application deadline, will be eligible for the awards. Priority will be given to those applicants whose graduate training has not been exclusively at McMaster.

If I am successful, is there the opportunity to renew the award?

No. Awards are non-renewable.

Are the page limits listed strictly enforced?

Please keep within the page limit while ensuring that your application is still legible and neat.

You are still eligible to apply. Please note that selection committee members are required to abstain from rating any applications for which they are listed as the proposed supervisor.

What is the start date for the Fellowship?

This is to be determined between the award recipient and their supervisor.
