Department of Medicine

Career Awards

Background

The Department of Medicine offers up to eight Internal Career Awards to promote the work of young scientists who intend to pursue a career focused on teaching or research related to clinical care.

Medicine Internal Career awards promote the work of young scientists and educators in our Department who are within the first five years of their initial appointment. New this year, we announce a mid-career research award for Associate Professors who are within the first 11 years of their initial university appointment. Also, one award is offered every other year in Quality Care and Patient Safety.  Two awards are named for prominent past Department of Medicine members:

  1. The Moran Campbell Internal Career Research Award
  2. The W. Watson Buchanan AFP Clinician Educator Award.

The internal competition will award career (personal) funding for a maximum $30K per year for up to three years in support of the individual’s teaching or research career.  The decision to award the funds is made at an impartial peer-review committee chaired by Dr. Hertzel Gerstein.
