Education & Professional Standing

Dr. Brian Christopher Misiaszek obtained his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Molecular Biology from the University of New Brunswick back in 1989.

After a brief detour in both basic research and the financial services industry, Brian attended medical school at the University of Western Ontario, obtaining his medical degree in 1997; he completed his Internal Medicine residency at Western as well. He obtained his Geriatric Medicine fellowship at McMaster University in 2001.

Dr. Misiaszek is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine for the Michael G. DeGroote Medical School at McMaster University (clinical educator). Brian is also the Chief of Service for Geriatrics at the Hamilton Health Sciences Centre in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

His clinical responsibilities include being a consultant for the Psychiatry and Medicine for the Aged in the Community (PMAC) program based out of the Chedoke campus of Hamilton Health Sciences, and does home visits with this innovative program. He also has a weekly all-day Geriatric Medicine clinic at St. Peter's Hosital's Centre For Healthy Aging.

He is also on the rota for providing in-patient consultants at two Hamilton Health Sciences hospital sites (Juravinski & Hamilton General Hospital), as well as providing regular coverage for the Geriatric Rehab Unit (GRU) located at the Juravinski Hospital site.

Clinical Interests

Dr. Misiaszek is involved in clinical Geriatric Medicine education at McMaster, and has a keen interest in medication optimization in the elderly, severe senile hoarding with self neglect (i.e. Diogenes Syndrome), behavioral issues in Dementia, and in the evidence for outreach (home visits) in Geriatrics.

Speaking Engagements

Dr. Misiaszek has been an invited lecturer of the the Alzheimer's Society of Canada in such cities as Hamilton, Burlington & Sault Ste. Marie. He has been repeatedly interviewed by the Hamilton Spectator and 100 Huntley Street on the subject of hoarding and Diogenes Syndrome. He was an invited international speaker for the 22nd National Adult Protective Services Association: Stemming the Tide of Adult Abuse conference of held in Buffalo NY on September 23rd, 2011.
