Indigenous lead takes nursing award

Bernice Downey, assistant professor of the School of Nursing, has received an award for excellence in nursing education and scholarship from the Council of Ontario University Programs in Nursing (COUPN).

She won the Award for Strategic Contribution to Nursing Education, as she has helped lead COUPN's response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. Downey helped create a partnership agreement between the Canadian Indigenous Nurses Association and COUPN, and organized related events on nursing education and professional development activities. Downey is also the lead for the Indigenous Health Initiative of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
