Three professors of the Faculty of Health Sciences will receive the University's highest honour this convocation season as they are named Distinguished University Professors.

Gerry Wright, professor of biochemistry and biomedical sciences, Andrea Baumann, associate vice-president of global health, and Salim Yusuf, professor of medicine, will receive the lifetime title.

The honour is awarded faculty members who are complete scholars, having demonstrated an outstanding research record with international impact and recognition along with a sustained record of excellence in teaching and service.

He is a global leader in bacterial and fungal antimicrobial resistance, and the developer of the Comprehensive Antimicrobial Resistance Database (CARD). Wright is also the co-founder of Canada's first academia-based high throughput screening facility.

Baumann has been involved in developing women health professionals in Pakistan, developing Ontario's first nurse practitioner program, designing the nursing graduate program and leading the creation of the award-winning Master of Science in Global Health program.

Yusuf is the Heart and Stroke Foundation / Marion W. Burke Chair in Cardiovascular Disease and a global leader in evidence-based cardiology. The founder of the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI), he was the world's second-most cited scientist globally in 2011 and, in 2014, The Globe and Mail named him Canada's most influential scientist.

Wright will be honoured at the Health Sciences convocation on Friday May 27, while Baumann and Yusuf will receive the title at the School of Nursing and Medical Radiation Sciences convocation on Tuesday June 14.
