McMaster University recently welcomed 16 Dutch midwives to Hamilton for a weeklong visit to learn about midwifery in Ontario.

The week involved a visit to the Midwifery Education Program at McMaster, visits to birth centres in Toronto and on the First Nations Reserve, midwifery practices, and the Association of Ontario Midwives and College of Midwives of Ontario in Toronto. At the end of the week a research symposium was held with presenters from the Netherlands and McMaster.

Midwifery care in Ontario was regulated in 1994 and was modeled on the Dutch midwifery system. Eileen Hutton, assistant dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences (Midwifery Education Program), has been a professor of midwifery at Vrije University in Amsterdam for the past five years and will complete her official appointment at the end of this month.
